If you wonder why your stomach is always bloated, it might be a good idea to cut down on your gum chewing. When excess air is swallowed (by chewing gum, eating and drinking too quickly, smoking, etc.), it will either stay in the stomach or be passed as a belch or gas. The number one culprit for swallowed excess air is chewing sugarless gum because of their artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol, maltitol, and other sugar alcohols. Sorbitol, for example, pulls water into your large intestines which can cause bloating.
So if you want your stomach to stay flat, only chew gum when you need to and don’t chew for hours and hours. Got a date and have bad breath? Grab some mint instead of gum. Better yet, just go brush your teeth if you have time.
